Teaching the History of American Presbyterianism

From 1837 to today

As Presbyterians migrated from the British Isles, the tradition continued developing into a uniquely American expression. After establishing roots through the Presbytery of Philadelphia, Presbyterians confronted a vast western frontier, the Second Great Awakening, and a nation on the precipice of civil war.

What’s inside

This set of eleven slides is a helpful teaching tool that illustrates the most significant schisms, controversies, and reunions in the Presbyterian Church from the Old School-New School Schism to the reunion of northern and southern Presbyterians in 1983.

The set provides a helpful starting point for pastors and teachers who can expound upon the social, political, economic, and theological forces that motivated the events. No lecture notes are provided.
